More Than Meets the Eye: Secrets Behind Straight Teeth

Perfectly straight teeth are a hallmark of a perfect smile. Right?

Wrong. Unfortunately, while having perfectly straight teeth means that the smile does indeed look lovely, it doesn’t mean that things are perfect below.

What you might not see under that perfect smile is undiagnosed jaw problems, airway issues or problems with jaw clenching because the teeth were pushed and pulled or even removed to attain the straight lines in the mouth.

What you see when someone smiles isn’t always the whole picture. We recognize that a healthy smile is more than just straight teeth and that healthy smiles go deeper than what you can see.

Are you interested in achieving a beautiful and healthy smile? We can help. We offer patients a wide array of orthodontic treatment options right here at Miami Designer Smiles.

Not Just About Straight Teeth

As we mentioned, we understand that a straight smile is desirable and no doubt attractive, but looking deeper is what gives us clues as to whether a smile is healthy.

For some individuals, achieving the straight smile may be meant having extra teeth extracted to relieve overcrowding. It also could have meant years of traditional braces to pull, push or turn a tooth differently to straighten it. After these interventions, there’s no doubt the smile looks great, but many people don’t realize these moves — no matter how small — can throw the mouth off balance even by a few millimeters.

But is just a few millimeters that big of a deal? Yes. When the mouth is unbalanced, there is stress on the jaws and TMJs — the joints that allow your jaw to move up and down, back and forth, and side to side. Over time, the stress on these components, plus the wear and tear on the muscles, nerves and ligaments surrounding the jaw joint, can lead to pain and dysfunction. So while your smile may be beautiful, you may be smiling through intense jaw pain.

Other issues that aren’t always noticeable from how a person’s smile looks are whether they have impacted teeth or teeth that have not erupted through the gum line. This can cause damage to the roots of neighboring teeth, resulting in crowding or pushing erupted teeth into unhealthy positions.

So how do you combat dental issues that impact the smile without putting your child or yourself at risk of jaw issues, airway problems or an unbalanced bite later down the road?

With advanced orthodontic treatments.

We offer an alternative to conventional orthodontics that improves the smile’s appearance but keeps the delicate balance of your jaw in mind.

We offer:

Invisalign® Orthodontic Treatment. Invisalign® is an advanced form of orthodontic treatment designed to allow you to improve the appearance of your smile without metal braces. Invisalign works to correct misaligned and crooked teeth using a series of clear plastic aligners. Invisalign is highly customizable, comfortable, effective and, because it is clear, nearly unnoticeable to others.

Clear Braces. Miami Designer Smiles is proud to offer patients who want to change their smiles discreetly the option of clear braces. Made of a transparent ceramic material that does not stain or change color, clear braces are nearly undetectable to others. In addition, clear braces are self-ligating, meaning they do not use rubber bands/elastics to keep the wire that helps move the teeth in place. A benefit of self-ligating braces is less pressure on your teeth compared to traditional metal braces. They’re also easier to clean.

When Is the Best Time for Orthodontic Treatment?

Right now! You’re ever too old to get a healthy and beautiful smile, and your child is never too young to think about orthodontic treatment options. In fact, early intervention is always best, as jaw growth can be guided versus corrected and often with fewer steps and less treatment time.

You can even talk to us about Myobrace, a no-braces orthodontic treatment approach for straightening the teeth that use very light pressure through removable orthodontic appliances worn for just one or two hours a day and overnight while sleeping.
